This week, children across China are united by one key theme: back to school.

How about in your country? How many terms are there in a year? On which day does the school year begin?

One of the most important is the opening ceremony. With roots stretching back centuries, the ruxueli (entrance ceremony) is regarded as one of life’s four great rituals, alongside the coming-of-age ceremony and marriage.

Of course, there are also many special school opening ceremonies nowadays. Let's take a look at what's different about the start of the new semester in Shanghai this year!

  Colorful Welcome Activities

A Fresh Start for a New Semester

To kick off the new semester, schools in Shanghai organized a wide range of activities filled with fun and ceremony。

On the first day of the new school year, students at the Elementary School Affiliated with East China Normal University placed their “wish capsules” — each containing personal goals for the year — into the class “starlight jar” . This symbolic ritual marked a meaningful start to the new term. At the end of the semester, the students will open the capsules to see whether, through their efforts, those wishes have been fulfilled.

At Oriental Jinxiu Kindergarten, children preparing to enter the senior class eagerly measured their height and exchanged class badges with friends, experiencing the “power of growing up” through a ceremonial first-writing activity(kaibi li). Guided by their teachers, they also visited the toddler class to comfort their younger peers who were crying from homesickness.

Humanoid Robot Joins the New Semester

  A Taste of Technology

Standing 1.31 meters tall, with dark skin, dressed in a green Haitong School uniform, and wearing a beige hat, a very special “new friend” caught the attention of students, teachers, and parents at the entrance of Shanghai Haitong Primary School’s Dongcheng Campus. It was the FourierN1, the first open-source humanoid robot developed by Fourier Intelligence. With 23 degrees of freedom, the robot can walk, run, and even carry out simple interactions with students.

80th Anniversary of Victory in the War of Resistance

  Remembering History

This year also marks the 80th anniversary of China’s victory in the War of Resistance Against Japan and the World Anti-Fascist War. Schools in Shanghai used the occasion to help students reflect on history and cherish peace.

At Zhangyang Campus of Zhuyuan Primary School, staff from the Veterans Affairs Bureau of Pudong New Area were invited to share old photographs from the Battle of Shanghai. “This photo was taken in 1937…” one of them explained while displaying the images. Through these vivid historical scenes, the students received their first patriotic education lesson of the new semester.

Other schools held “peace dove” origami activities during their first class of the semester. First graders, assisted by older students, folded paper doves and wrote their names along with peace pledges such as “I hope for world peace” and “I will cheer for my country。” These doves, carrying messages of innocence and responsibility, were displayed on classroom bulletin boards, becoming heartfelt declarations for the new school year.
