  Do you enjoy music festivals?

Have you ever imagined experiencing one inside a centuries-old classical garden?

In Shanghai, such a cross-time, cross-space audio-visual feast is underway. It is the “Yu Garden Summer Fantasy Night”—a romantic and magical journey unique to the East.

  The Time Code of

  a Centuries-old Garden

Yu Garden, with a history of more than 450 years, first built during the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty, was once the private garden of Pan Yunduan, a Ming official.

It was named “Yu” (meaning comfort and delight) to fulfill Pan’s wish that his parents could spend their later years here in peace and happiness. Every tree, stone, and tile reflects the poetic imagination of the ancients about life. For more than four centuries, Yu Garden has witnessed both prosperity and turmoil, bearing witness to Shanghai’s transformation from a Jiangnan town into a cosmopolitan metropolis.

Even today, strolling through Yu Garden allows visitors to immerse themselves in the elegance of traditional Jiangnan landscaping, where time seems to slow down. But this year, Yu Garden offers something unexpected: no longer a static historical scroll, it has been reimagined as a vibrant stage that tells the oldest stories in the youngest way.

  Breaking Boundaries

  at Yu Garden

As night falls, neon hues illuminate the eaves, while the rippling waters of the Nine-Turn Bridge reflect dazzling patterns of light and shadow. The entire Yu Garden transforms into a glowing palace.

Entering through Gate No. 2 of the Yu Garden Bazaar feels like stepping through a portal into another dimension. Ninghui Road has been recreated as the Joy Pavilion from the popular animation Heaven Official’s Blessing. Alongside the Nine-Turn Bridge, visitors encounter the peach tree from Fairy Album, the Grand Ruins from The Record of a Mortal’s Journey to Immortality, the ink-wash landscapes of Fog Hill of Five Elements, and the iconic “Three Thousand Lanterns” from Heaven Official’s Blessing. With lasers and mist weaving together, these scenes unfold into a breathtaking, immersive Eastern fantasy.

Technology adds even more magic. On the façade of Hefeng Tower, dynamic mapping brings animated scenes to life against ancient architecture, turning it into an unmissable visual spectacle.

Here, audiences can hear the striking fusion of guzheng and electronic music, with Lai Nüye—the vocalist behind the theme song of Black Myth: Wukong—delivering a powerful live performance. The Guofeng Orchestra of Twenty-Four Musicians also brings Heaven Official’s Blessing to life with stirring renditions of Blossoms Fill the City and One Flower, One Sword.

Every weekend, the “Weekend Fantasy Night” offers an array of performances at the Yu Garden Bazaar: graceful water-sleeve dances at Golden Plaza, traditional music and boat shows at the Nine-Turn Bridge, and genre-bending electronic sets at the Central Plaza. Each stage brims with surprises and delight.

“The land retains its splendid legacy, and we return to tread its heights”.With more than 400 years of history, Yu Garden continues to thrive, and Chinese culture remains forever young. One day, we look forward to the day when you return to the East, carrying the world’s gaze, to experience it firsthand.
