How can a kitten “play” with a tower crane? This isn’t just our imagination—on Fuxing Island in Shanghai, a kitten is actually “operating” a tower crane with a remote control!
At the Shipyard Park on Fuxing Island, beneath the towering, rusted crane, stands a giant inflatable cat. Nearly 10 meters tall, the cat holds a red remote control in its paw, gazing upward as if it’s operating something. If you look up from the cat, you’ll see three enormous tower cranes looming above. With the cat seemingly “controlling” them, the cranes appear to come to life. Nearby, four smaller cats are also looking skyward, as if watching the giant cat in action.

Before we dive into the world of kittens, let’s take a moment to explore the “mysterious” island—Fuxing Island.

The birth and development of Fuxing Island resemble a documentary about the growth of Shanghai’s industry. According to Shanghai Local Chronicles, in 1906, a sandbank was formed in the Huangpu River due to erosion, and after artificial land reclamation and embankment construction in 1934, Fuxing Island was officially born. Spanning 3.42 kilometers in length and up to 550 meters in width, it is the only inland island in the Huangpu River. The island covers approximately 1.3 square kilometers and is home to numerous industrial relics, including old warehouses, factory buildings, and dock facilities. It was once the cradle of the China Shipbuilding Factory, and the towering cranes and shipyards bear witness to the rise of modern industry in China.

In 2025, with the launch of the Shanghai Urban Space Art Season, Fuxing Island underwent a spectacular transformation. As one of the main exhibition areas, the island embraced its unique industrial legacy with creative art installations that reimagined the past.

Look! The Big Cat is “Fishing”

Among the most eye-catching artworks is the giant cat we mentioned earlier. Created by artist Tango, the inflatable installation “Cat’s Channel” invites visitors to pause and reflect. Tango explains that cats represent relaxation and healing, and by pairing a cat with an industrial crane, the goal is to soften the hard edges of industrial landscapes and provoke thought about the relationship between urban spaces, nature, and life.

What’s even more fascinating is that the installation incorporates AR (augmented reality) technology! Using a smartphone to scan the area unlocks a virtual interactive experience where the crane’s hook becomes a fishing line, the sky transforms into a vast waterbody, and fish swim around. The cat, gazing upwards, appears to be waiting for a big catch. This surreal scene has captivated many visitors, who rush to take photos and share the experience.

A 1300-Meter Waterfront Dream

Fuxing Island isn’t just an artsy destination—it’s also an ecological marvel. As the only island on the Huangpu River, it boasts a 1300-meter continuous waterfront, with the main shipping channel on the east and the Fuxing Canal to the west. Together, they create a unique “intersection of river and canal” landscape. According to the Fuxing Island Planning Scheme by the Shanghai Planning and Natural Resources Bureau, this shoreline has been ecologically restored and enhanced, making it a popular “happy paradise” for citizens to relax.

In the evening, you can stroll along the wooden boardwalk in Shipyard Park, where the cranes of the Hudong Shipyard across the river and the giant tower cranes of Fuxing Island face each other. The blend of industrial remnants and natural scenery forms a moving picture in the twilight. According to data from the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center, the air quality and water quality on the island have significantly improved, and many animals have made it their home.

Fuxing Island’s Trendy Cultural Calendar

Fuxing Island’s cultural activities have kept the island buzzing with life. In October, the Bilibili “Cheers Music Festival” was held at Shipyard Park, with electronic, rock, and indie musicians performing alongside spectacular light and sound effects that fused industrial heritage with modern performance art. In November, the “Islanders Art Program” launched a “Shipbuilding Workshop” where children created mini ships using cardboard and sticks, learning about shipbuilding science. In December, the skateboarding park’s open classes attracted young people who challenged their limits, guided by professional instructors.

The island is also known for its vibrant market culture. Every weekend, the “Shanghai Style Jiangnan - Fuxing Market” and “Zhongshan Creations - Fuxing Market” open, with the former featuring local treasures like Baoshan intangible cultural heritage crafts, Luodian rice, and Yongda mushrooms, while the latter showcases creative brands like plant-dyed accessories, Jingdezhen ceramics, and original leather goods. At the markets, visitors can sample traditional delicacies from Lao Xiangzhai tea house or discover AI-generated “soundscape maps”, blending the old and the new.

Fuxing Island, once a hidden gem, has now become a shining star, radiating with a fresh vibrancy. Here, you can touch the traces of history, admire works of art, enjoy technological fun, and experience the poetry of nature. If you’re visiting Shanghai, make sure you don’t miss this extraordinary place!
