In Shanghai, the recently concluded 2026 China Home Appliance and Consumer Electronics Expo drew crowds around Yufeng Future’s M1 “air taxi”. Covering the route from Shanghai’s Eastern Hub to Suzhou’s Jinji Lake—a journey that would take over an hour by car—it now takes just 15 minutes. The ticket price? About the same as a regular taxi ride.

In Hubei, at the “First Spring Gathering” in February, four locally made eVTOLs (electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles) debuted together for the first time, giving people a concrete glimpse of what flying commutes could look like.

Air taxis are moving from the realm of science fiction to reality faster than ever.

  What is an “Air Taxi”?

The technical term is eVTOL—electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle. Simply put, it’s like an electric car with wings. Like a helicopter, it can take off and land vertically without a runway, but it’s electrically powered, quieter, and more environmentally friendly. You could take off from a rooftop, parking lot, or even an open park space. Ordering one could be as simple as hailing a ride through an app—your flying vehicle arrives on schedule.

Several Chinese companies have already produced prototypes and completed test flights. For instance, a Shanghai tech company’s “Shengshi Long” model completed a cross-sea, cross-city demonstration flight from Shenzhen to Zhuhai in 2024, reducing a 2.5–3 hour car journey to just 20 minutes. In Hubei, Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone is accelerating the low-altitude economy, building an ecosystem that spans eVTOL development, manufacturing, and digital air traffic management.

  What Can It Do?

The applications of air taxis go far beyond urban commuting.

For instance, when an elderly patient suffers a sudden heart attack and a ground ambulance is stuck in traffic, a “flying ICU” can get them to surgery within 15 minutes. Wuhan Fushengtong Aviation’s fully electric flying ICU cuts rescue costs from nearly 10,000 yuan with a traditional helicopter to under 3,000 yuan.

Tourists could book air taxis like regular ride-hailing services, enjoying aerial views of city landmarks or natural scenery.

In remote islands or mountainous regions, eVTOLs can deliver urgent supplies, bypassing road limitations.

From urban commuting to medical rescue, from tourism to logistics, air taxis are redefining our relationship with distance.

  Why a “Taxi” Model?

Unlike private aircraft, air taxis emphasize shared, on-demand service. Like today’s ride-hailing apps, people can book flights via a mobile app, while a centralized platform plans routes and manages takeoffs and landings. This model lowers personal ownership costs, increases airspace efficiency, and makes aerial travel accessible to more people.

Of course, integrating air taxis into daily life requires solving challenges in airspace management, safety certification, landing infrastructure, and noise control. The Civil Aviation Administration of China has launched drone test zones in multiple regions, and Shanghai, Hubei, and other areas are rolling out low-altitude economy plans to pave the way for commercial operations.

From Shanghai to Hubei: The Low-Altitude Economy Takes Off

Shanghai is at the forefront of eVTOL development and testing. In 2024, Shanghai Fengfei Aviation Technology received the world’s first type certificate for an eVTOL above one ton, marking China’s entry into the global front ranks in this field. Meanwhile, in Hubei, the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone has prioritized the low-altitude economy, attracting leading companies and planning a complete industrial chain covering R&D, manufacturing, operations, and services. From the Yangtze River Delta to central China, a blueprint for a “city in the sky” is gradually taking shape.
